Today, there are tons of ways you can get paid for just about anything, including ways to get paid to sleep! Yes, you read that right. There are opportunities to make money in your sleep, literally. If sleeping is your dream side hustle, this article is a must read for you.

Let’s get into it.

What Are Ways to Make Money Sleeping

There are many ways you can make money sleeping. You can do this by participating in sleep studies, testing sleep products, participating in sleep-related projects, and more.

Each project will be a little different and carry requirements like:

  • Age restrictions
  • Demographics
  • Geographical restrictions

For example, a sleep study could be interested in studying males age 18-28 with no health problems for a sleep-related product.

Or, a sleep tester position could call for women aged 30-35 to test mattresses.

While these opportunities can be fun and lucrative to participate in, they’re not stable sources of income so you won’t be able to make a living getting paid to sleep.

This won’t be regular ongoing income every month either, most likely but a fun way to make a little extra money one month (or add to your side hustle stack), so keep these things in mind as you evaluate these sleep opportunities.

7 Smart Ways to Get Paid to Sleep

1. Mattress Tester

This job is just what it sounds like. You’ll get paid to test mattresses!

Depending on where you work, you might have tasks like:

  • Writing reviews on your sleep according to mattress for a period of time
  • Testing out multiple brands of mattresses
  • Rating multiple mattress companies

This sounds like a dream job and it can be, especially for sleep lovers. According to this source, a mattress tester can fetch a salary just over $40,000 per year.

There are even opportunities like this (now closed) where companies seek out sleep testers to test and keep mattresses along with compensation (this gig paid $3,000).

If you’re looking for a stable job as a mattress tester, check out mattress companies like Sealy, Serta, and others that may be hiring for this position.

For one-time projects like the Sleep Junkie gig mentioned above, check out Google and search for opportunities like this throughout the year to hopefully land one in the future!

2. Professional Napper

This sleep gig is to be a professional napper by the company EachNight. They’ll pay you $1,500 to nap!

How it works?

Their website explains all the details of this gig. Here’s the gist:

  • Must nap everyday for 30 days
  • Must be able to sleep alone, undisturbed
  • Strong English writing skills
  • Open to all countries
  • 18+ years old

Over a 30-day period, nappers selected will participate in a variety of sleep experiments testing the effects of napping for fatigue relief along with effects on memory, productivity, and motivation.

At the end of the testing period, participants receive a one-time payment of $1,500.

3. Sleep Studies

Participating in a paid research study like a sleep study is like being a participant in a science experiment. There are studies on a variety of topics like medication testing, product testing, etc. Sleep studies test sleep.

Depending on the study, you may or may not stay overnight in a facility where you’re monitored during your sleep. These are usually ongoing for a short period of time like 30 days with longer stays (up to 90 days or longer) allowing you to do the study from home.

Where to find sleep studies?

A Google search can turn up a number of sleep study opportunities. Here are some places you can check out:

Sleep studies can pay a few hundred dollars to up to a few thousand dollars, depending on the study.

How can you get accepted into a sleep study?

There are going to be requirements which will vary from study to study. You should make sure you meet the requirements and then, there may be additional tests and requirements that need to be satisfied in order for you to be accepted into the study.

  • Psychological testing
  • Physical exam
  • Sleep-related testing/exams

What’s required?

They will be studying your sleep so you may be required to sleep overnight one or more nights at a sleep facility or you may be able to sleep at home.

You’ll be subject to testing and monitoring so you might be hooked up to medical devices to monitor your heart rate, breathing, etc.

The sleep requirements may be challenging.

Aside from being connected to medical devices, you might have to sleep in a new sleeping position, go to sleep at a certain time, wear a hospital gown when you sleep, etc. These new sleeping habits that you’re not used to may impact your comfort and sleep, which could lead to restless nights.

Also keep in mind that inpatient studies might be really boring. Be prepared to hand over your cell phone, not have access to computer, tablet, TV, or other electronics and be isolated. These are some things to expect.

Is it worth it?

Well, they will pay you to sleep. You won’t have to work or perform any tasks or work-related duties. Depending on compensation and the terms, it might be worth it to be a little uncomfortable for some time in exchange for a paycheck.

Other Ways to Get Paid to Sleep

These are indirect ways to get paid to sleep. They aren’t directly related to making money for the sleep you do, like the above opportunities but technically you can make money in your sleep doing these so I think they’re worth checking out.

4. Hotel Reviewer

Hotel reviewers travel to hotels and review their stay, including:

  • Hotel room
  • Amenities and accommodations
  • Hotel staff

This is an ideal way to get paid to sleep for travel bloggers.

Travel bloggers make money blogging about their travel including hotel stays. Reviewing your hotel can make you money through affiliate marketing and sponsorships.

With affiliate marketing, you’ll refer people to the hotel you visited and earn commission if your referral results in a sale.

Sponsorship income can come from hotels that pay you to stay at their property. You’ll make money talking about them on your travel blog, social media channels, email list, etc.

5. Sleep Product Tester

You can make money testing sleep products like mattresses, sleep supplements, pillows, and other sleep-related products.

Making money in your sleep with this comes from affiliate marketing and sponsorships, similar to travel blogging.

How does it work?

For affiliate marketing, you can buy sleep products to test for yourself and talk about them on your blog, YouTube channel or social media channels like Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. When viewers make a purchase through your affiliate link, you’ll earn a commission!

For example, if you refer a $3,000 mattress with a 10% affiliate commission, selling 5 mattresses through your affiliate link will make you $1,500!

Sponsorships work similarly except you can be gifted sleep products like mattresses and sleep products and get paid to talk about them through your network.

For example, the mattress company Lull could gift you a queen size mattress plus pay you $2,000 to talk about them on your social media accounts.

These are some examples of how you can get paid to sleep by testing sleep products!

6. House Sitter

A house sitter makes money staying in houses. It’s just what it sounds like. People who need house sitters may be traveling or away from their home and need someone to watch over the house, water plants, feed pets, etc.

How it works?

First, you’ll book a house sitting gig. You’ll talk to the owner about their needs, how long they’ll be away, etc. and then you’ll report to work at their house.

A lot of digital nomads do house sitting on the side as a way to make money and get a free place to stay as they travel. House sitting jobs can take you around the world, supporting your global travel.

Here are some places where you can land domestic and international house sitting jobs:

7. Dog Sitter

As a dog sitter you will make money playing with dogs. Your duties might include grooming, feeding, administering medication, dog walking, and related activities.

How it works?

Dog sitting gigs usually happen in the dog owners home and you could get paid to dog sit for a few hours or an extended period of time (over 24 hours) which is how you can make money in your sleep.
